Cylons, Plastic Boys, and Gynoids: In The Future There Will Be Robophobia

Is it robophobic to make people take a test designed so as to make the person out themselves as non homo sapiens?

Is this testing whether I'm a replicant or a lesbian, Mr. Deckard?

Intrusive questions: “Is this testing whether I’m a replicant or a lesbian, Mr. Deckard?”

In the future, there will be bias, prejudice, and stereotypes against artificial persons.

Would you honor a synthetic person’s identity or label it Synthetic Identity Disorder? If a robot told you that it felt like it was in the wrong body, would you be understanding?

If I have always felt human inside, does that mean I am human?

Philosorobot: If I have always felt human inside, does that mean I am?

Do androids dream of electric sheep? What happens when we build robots to be like us? Can we make artificial persons who believe they are human? Would a synthetic being who has always believed itself to be human become depressed to discover itself artificial?

Will we use our artificial people to perform jobs we don’t want to do? Will they be second or third class citizens? Will they even ever be considered citizens or people?

  1. *sighs* … “Blade Runner?” …

    worst. movie. ever.

(Because there’s No Mercer In It, and Mercer plays a prominent role in making Philip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” one of the most brilliantly provocative novels ever written.)

    Also, you missed Rommie?

(props are due to Harper for providing the shell… but she really is an incarnation of the ship: “I am a warship, and I don’t like walking away from a fight”… and a positive role model, I should think, for tough times.-)

    thanks,

My favourite “robosexual” work is an old anime movie, HI NO TORI 2772. I actually led a fandub effort into Russian in 1998 (released through “pirates” who did a great job, it was spotted from Tel Aviv to Vladivostok). There is an official English dub of questionable quality, available in its entirety on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qlc70ihusac

In it a robotic girl eventually learns to “be human” just for the man she loves and there is lots of other stuff there… Oh, she’s my second and ;ast long-standing movie crush and the first one was in childhood.

I don’t know how I missed this comment. Slipped in between the others you posted that day.

It’s very cute in a boy-wonderment wish-fulfilling way. Out of respect for your childhood memory I will spare you the feminist analysis and just appreciate it for it what it is. 😉 That’s quite an effort to put into a show, so it must have made an lasting impression.

In related topics, you mentioned you are watching Macross. I grew up watching Macross and playing Robotech role playing games. Admiral Lisa Hayes was one my favorite characters and I empathized with her and wanted to be her for awhile back then.

      • ramendik says:

I’m quite aware of the feminist criticism, which in fact existed at the time, and as I read, someone confronted Tezuka with it on his 1981 US trip. But Tezuka was not young at the time. The work represents a time even before its own, being one of the later works of the classic creator.

It’s by no means a politically relevant work about women! It doesn’t even pass the Bechdel test – something nearly unthinkable for modern anime, where that test is usually flied through even if the work is a series for high school boys full of big breasts etc. The only *human* woman in the anime was, apparently, never given much thought at all – a shallow version of the “yamato nadeshiko”.

The movie is somewhat more interesting as a work about robots, though. Many other works (including BSG and even some other “boy wish fulfulment” fare like Chobits) tend to start with much more complete robot personalities. The Asimovian theme of the robot actually going from machine to person is seldom tackled, and even more seldom in a romantic context. There is at least one much more recent anime that approaches it, though with the romantic subtext rather subdued – “Eve no Jikan” (“TIme of Eve”).

And Lisa Hayes, yeah. One of the more successful Macek interpretations; the character does work well in the recut version, as a stereotypical English person, though the original was Japanese. I can definitely “get” wanting to be her – and you were, apparently, luckily spared her DYRL version. (The animation in “Macross: Do You Remember Love” is a wonder, but unfortunately they “feminized” Misa in a rather clumsy way).

My biggest issue with Robotech, though, is the voiceless VA for Minmay, slaughtering the appeal of the original character. (There’s a lot to hate the original Minmay for if one wants to, but at least her voice, Mari Iijima, sang quite well).

      • ramendik says:

Oh. and another one re Macross. While Robotech has a different emphasis, in Macross the original Meltrandi (female Zentradi) had nothing to do with the male Zentradi. It was only their acceptance of human culture that brought them together. In DYRL, Zentradi and Meltrandi were actually *at war* before the invasion of culture into their society.

Doesn’t this remind you of a certain philosophy? 🙂

The parody may have been intentional or not. But just imagine a 9 meter high FCM flying a Quaedluun-Rau!

three drano attacks, and cathy brennan/miriam afloat/natalie trimm/dirtfromdirt extreme Adderall Jazz Happy Hands, an entire apartment covered in Adderall dust. i wet my sleeve of my black military jacket, and wiped the entire hutch in the dining room with my arm like an automobile windshield wiper, and had a two inch by sixteen inch long snowdust of Adderall from my wrist, to my elbow and upper arm.

three drano attacks, three super moons. the first drano attack on June 3, 2014 the day after my post accusing a mother and father of ignoring three waves of feminism by transitioning their daughter for doing “doodly” things like wearing blue, and being athletic, wanting a boy’s haircut, etc. as though the HBO series “Mad Men” was encouraging parents to return to genderized roles for male and female children.

on June 6, my shemale pronwanker husband who came down with schizophrenia, after he transitioned… dranod me again…

and then again in July or late June by putting drano in the Pulled Pork dinner he made for us both.

the first supermoon, was red and bloody.

then the TransgenderPatriachyForce tried again at Femonade/Cathy Brennan/Natalie Trimm/Miriam Afloat’s safe space for radical feminists on the run from their murderous shemale dik-swinging husbands with a dusting of Adderall over the entire apartment.
